Clean Pavers Don't Stay That Way Without Sealing
Pressure washing your pavers removes surface grime, algae, and staining — but without sealing, they’ll look the same way again within a season. Pavers are porous. They absorb stains, moisture, and organic growth the moment the clean surface is exposed. Sealing closes those pores and gives the surface a protective barrier that repels water, oil, and biological growth.
A proper clean-and-seal job also locks in your polymeric sand, prevents joint erosion, and stabilizes the paver surface against shifting. It’s not a luxury add-on — it’s the step that makes your cleaning investment last.
- Protects against organic stains, mold, and algae regrowth
- Repels oil, grease, food, and water stains
- Stabilizes paver joints and locks polymeric sand in place
A 2 to 3 Day Process, Done in the Right Order
Paver sealing isn’t a same-day job done right. New pavers can often go straight to seal. Existing pavers need the full sequence — clean, prep, sand, then seal — and each step depends on the one before it being fully complete.
Step one is removing all organic growth from the paver surface, then prepping with an efflorescence cleaner to neutralize the white salt haze that forms in concrete pavers. The pavers and joints have to dry completely before polymeric sand goes in. Sand gets swept into the joints, then a vibrating compactor is run across the surface to drive out air pockets. A light water mist activates the polymer binders. Once the pavers are dry again, the sealer goes down — but only if there’s no rain in the forecast for the next 24 hours.
- Full sequence: clean → efflorescence prep → sand → compact → activate → seal
- Vibrating compactor removes air pockets in joint sand
- Sealer applied only with 24+ hours of dry weather ahead
- Typically a 2 to 3 day project
Wet Look or Natural Finish — Your Choice
Sealers come in two primary finishes: wet look (gloss) and natural (matte). Wet look sealer gives pavers a darkened, saturated appearance — it makes colors pop and is popular on brick paver driveways and pool decks. Natural finish sealer preserves the original color and texture while still providing full protection — preferred for a more understated look.
Both finishes provide the same protective barrier. The choice is purely aesthetic. We’ll show you samples and let you decide before we apply anything.
- Wet look (gloss) sealer for saturated, enhanced color
- Natural (matte) finish for original appearance with full protection
- Sample review before application — no surprises

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does paver sealing cost in Hartford County?
Paver sealing in Hartford County typically runs $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot depending on paver type, condition, and number of coats required. A standard 400-square-foot patio runs $200 to $600. A driveway can run higher depending on size. Clean-and-seal packages are priced together — contact us for a free on-site assessment and quote.
How often should pavers be sealed in Connecticut?
Most paver surfaces in Hartford County benefit from resealing every 2 to 4 years. Connecticut’s freeze-thaw cycle, UV exposure, and salt from winter road maintenance all break down sealer over time. You’ll notice the surface starting to show water absorption rather than beading when it’s time to reseal.
Do pavers need to be cleaned before sealing?
Yes — always. Applying sealer over dirty pavers traps contamination under the coating and causes premature peeling, clouding, or discoloration. Every paver sealing job we do begins with a thorough pressure wash and surface preparation. There are no shortcuts to a sealing job that lasts.
Can you repair or replace polymeric sand before sealing?
Yes. Joint sand assessment is part of our pre-sealing process. If polymeric sand has eroded from joints — from previous pressure washing or normal wear — we can reinstall it before sealing. Sealed joints with intact polymeric sand resist weed growth, ant infestation, and joint erosion much better than unsealed or eroded joints.
